For every $2 donated, $1 is matched from Thrivent to support the orphans at the Promise Home as well as the other Congo ministries of Global Fingerprints (a child sponsorship program), Horizon School (to educate those who otherwise wouldn’t get an education), Tandala Hospital (the only medical facility for many, many miles and serves over 1 million people), and Elikya Center (a vocational program for older orphans and widows) in the Congo. A group of five Lakewood members will be traveling to the Congo in October for 2 weeks. Our “MISSION: CONGO” Team will be providing hygiene kits for girls and women, clothing, love kits (personal care items for school children all around the Congo), educational materials for the Elikya training center, and helping out where needed. Highlighting the Promise Home, as an expression of God’s kingdom, it (as well as the other ministries) work with the Congolese Free Church (CECU), including its churches and partners. The Promise Home delivers personalized, professional services to young people with disabilities and their families. Promise Home began by serving 12 children through residential care in 2018. The program now serves 90 children, 50 of whom are in residential care. As participants in the ministry, these young people receive an education, independent living skills, vocational training, community and an understanding of what it means to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. Promise Home is successfully helping young people with disabilities participate in family, church and community life. As an example, five children were recently reintegrated with their families and two graduates are pursuing college education—one studying accounting and one in seminary to become a pastor. This year, Promise Home is deepening and extending its impact by piloting a new family engagement model and training two child case workers as disability community care workers. By shifting the ministry focus toward households and local churches, families and entire communities will be equipped to provide care for these children, extending the impact of Promise Home beyond its residential capacity and deepening the ministry of the Congolese church.
